Port Ludlow Totem Pole Restoration & Celebration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 18, 2025

PORT LUDLOW, WA — Port Ludlow community, neighbors and friends are invited to a special celebration honoring the restoration of the iconic totem pole at Burner Point, originally carved by Tsimshian Master Carver, David Boxley. The restored pole will be rededicated at a community gathering and dinner celebration on Sunday, August 10, starting at 2:00 PM.

“This totem pole is more than a landmark—it represents our shared story, values, and connection to this place,” said Diana Smeland, President of the Ludlow Bay Village Association. “We’re honored to work alongside David Boxley and grateful to The Resort at Port Ludlow for their partnership and support in bringing this important restoration to life. It’s a true community effort, and we’re excited to celebrate it together.”

Boxley and his team will be on-site in Port Ludlow the week of August 4, carefully refurbishing the 40-foot cedar totem pole, which has stood as a landmark and cultural symbol for nearly three decades. Visitors are encouraged to stop by throughout the week to witness the artistry in action as the team works to restore the piece with traditional tools, techniques, and care.

The Totem Pole Dedication Ceremony will take place at Burner Point and will include cultural performances by Native dancers and singers, and remarks from David Boxley. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to attend a Celebration Dinner, featuring locally inspired cuisine from The Fireside Restaurant.

During the 2015 restoration ceremony, Boxley stated: “It’s really important to teach people the history behind the pole. It represents all of us. Once people see that, they see the importance.”

The totem pole was originally commissioned by the Pope Resources and tells a story of heritage and connection. Its restoration is a symbol of the community’s ongoing respect for Indigenous voices and craft.

Donations in support of the project can be made to the Ludlow Bay Village Assoc. (LBVA) – Totem Pole Fund, Attn: Davis Financial, PO Box 846, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
